Made for the outdoors.

Granite for landscaping

Granite is made for the outdoors. As granite paving and landscape stone it handles rain, frost and sun, and a rough finish gives a safe grip. For a garden path, outdoor granite steps or a driveway, what matters is the finish, the thickness and the ground under the stone.

Why granite works so well outdoors

Granite is dense. Frost does not harm it and sunlight does not change it. That is why it has paved streets and gardens for generations. It can be sawn, flamed, split or cut into small blocks (setts). So almost any size is possible, from big slabs to small cobbles.

  • Weather-proof: rain, frost and sun do not wear it down like many other materials.
  • Grip: rough finishes, like flamed and bush-hammered, help stop slips.
  • Many uses: paving, steps, walls, edging, benches, water features and cobbles.
  • Easy care: sweeping and an occasional wash keep it looking good.

Tip. Dark granite gets hot in strong sun. Where people may walk barefoot, like around a pool, light colours stay cooler.

Outdoor finishes and thickness

Outdoors, a rough surface keeps people safe. Flamed, brushed, bush-hammered and natural-split surfaces grip well when wet. Keep polished granite for inside or covered areas.

  • Walking: pavers about 20–30 mm thick, laid on a full bed of mortar, are common.
  • Vehicles: pick thicker pieces (often 40–50 mm or more) or setts. Lay them on a well-packed base made for the weight.
  • Size: big slabs look modern and have fewer joints. Setts and cobbles give a traditional surface that can flex a little.

Base, drainage and outdoor steps

Stone outdoors depends on what is under it. A well-packed base, a gentle slope for water and firm edges keep paving flat for years. Water will not collect on it.

  • Drainage: lay it with a small slope away from buildings, so water runs off.
  • Base: pack it hard in layers. If the ground sinks, you will see it first in the joints.
  • Edges: hold the edges of paving with a kerb or edging, so it cannot spread out.
  • Steps: make every step the same height. Give each step a rough finish and a clear front edge.
  • Joints: fill joints with the right jointing material and allow for a little movement.

Sealing and care

Outdoor granite is easy to look after. Sweep often. Wash with water and a soft brush. Remove moss or green growth with a cleaner made for stone.

  • Sealing: not a must. A sealer can help keep out oil, leaf stains and ground-in dirt.
  • Do not use: acid cleaners, or a strong water jet held close to the stone. It can harm the joints and make the finish rough.
  • Cold weather: in cold places, clear snow with a plastic shovel and use little de-icing salt.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using polished stone on outdoor paths, steps or around pools.
  • Saving money on the base or forgetting the slope for water.
  • Using thin pavers where vehicles will drive.
  • Leaving the edges loose, so the paving slowly spreads apart.
  • Using the wrong mortar or adhesive. It can stain the stone.
  • Forgetting shade and damp places, where moss and green growth will form.

This is general advice. Always follow your stone fitter or engineer, and your local building rules.
