Granite is natural stone made of tiny crystals locked tightly together. They give every slab its colour, its pattern, its sparkle and its strength.
Granite starts as hot, melted rock deep under the ground. It cools very slowly, over a very long time. So the crystals grow big enough to see. Every slab has its own grain, fine or bold.

Quality
How to check a granite slab before you buy.
Granite is natural, so no two slabs are exactly alike. A good slab is flat, evenly polished and matches the rest of its batch. Check these things before you decide.
Flat, and the same thickness
Put a straight edge on the slab and look along its sides. A good slab lies flat and has one thickness all over, often 18 to 30 mm. Then the joins meet without a step.
Even shine, no holes or cracks
Look at the surface in low, side light. The shine should be the same everywhere, with no dull spots, tiny holes or hair cracks. Lines and specks in the stone are natural. A crack that catches your fingernail is not.
Same colour and pattern
Slabs for one job should come from the same batch, so colour, specks and pattern match. Ask to see them side by side in daylight, not only under shop lights.
Know your finish
The finish changes how the same stone looks and feels:
- Polished
- a mirror shine; makes the colour deeper and shows the crystals.
- Honed
- smooth and matte, with no shine.
- Flamed
- rough, made with strong heat; good grip, often used outside.
- Leathered
- a soft, slightly wavy feel with a low shine.
- Brushed
- brushed with wire for an old, worn look.
